- Active commuting has one of the more consistent evidence bases linking an everyday habit to reduced mortality.
- A meta-analysis pooling 17 studies and 829,098 workers found active commuting reduced all-cause mortality by 9% and cardiovascular mortality by 15%, with cycling alone cutting all-cause mortality by 21% and cardiovascular mortality by 33% in a clear dose-response pattern -- higher levels of commuting activity produced larger reductions, while low levels of walking showed no measurable benefit.
- The UK Biobank cohort of over 263,000 adults corroborated this: cycle commuters had a hazard ratio of 0.59 for all-cause mortality and lower cardiovascular disease incidence than non-active commuters, with walking commuting also linked to lower cardiovascular disease risk though not all-cause mortality.
