Research summary
- A widely discussed Swedish cohort study found that women who avoided sun exposure had higher all-cause mortality than those with high sun exposure, and a more recent UK Biobank analysis similarly found higher ultraviolet light exposure associated with lower mortality — provocative findings that run counter to standard sun-safety messaging, though they come from observational cohorts that cannot rule out confounding (people who avoid the sun may do so because they are already less healthy or less physically active).
- A separate, better-established literature concerns children: multiple dose-response meta-analyses consistently find more outdoor light exposure reduces the risk and progression of myopia (nearsightedness), one of the more genuinely solid findings in this topic.
- Given the small number of mortality-focused studies, their observational design, and the well-known cancer risks of UV overexposure that this literature does not resolve, the overall evidence here is best characterized as emerging and should not be read as a recommendation to maximize sun exposure without other precautions.
