Research summary
- Forgiveness — of others or of oneself — shows a consistent but modest correlation with physical health across a large observational literature, alongside some evidence of a plausible cardiovascular mechanism.
- The largest synthesis pooled 128 studies and 58,531 participants and found a significant, if small, positive correlation between forgiveness of others and physical health (r=0.14) that held regardless of age, gender, race, or study design.
- A separate meta-analysis focused on self-forgiveness found a stronger correlation with physical health (r=0.32 across 18 samples, n=5,653) and an even larger correlation with psychological wellbeing (r=0.45 across 65 samples, n=17,939).
- Smaller physiological studies point to a possible mechanism: in 308 young women, trait forgiveness was independently associated with more favorable cardiovascular hemodynamics after accounting for anger; in 99 adults, higher trait forgiveness predicted lower resting diastolic blood pressure and faster blood-pressure recovery after a stress task; and in 108 college students recalling real interpersonal betrayals, both trait and in-the-moment forgiveness were linked to lower blood pressure, heart rate, and faster cardiovascular recovery after conflict.
- The consistent direction across a very large pooled sample and independently replicated physiological studies is notable, but every single piece of this evidence is correlational or based on brief lab-induced stress — no randomized trial has tested whether teaching people to forgive more actually improves hard health outcomes over time, and reverse causation (healthier, less-stressed people finding it easier to forgive) can't be ruled out.
