Association of Cycling with Risk of All-Cause and Cardiovascular Disease Mortality: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Cohort Studies.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 9 cohort studies with 478,847 participants examining cycling and mortality risk. The highest versus lowest cycling level was associated with a 23% reduction in all-cause mortality and a 24% reduction in cardiovascular disease mortality. All-cause mortality risk declined linearly with more cycling, while cardiovascular mortality followed a U-shaped pattern with an estimated optimal benefit around 15 MET-h/week. The authors conclude that any level of cycling is better than none for all-cause mortality, while an appropriate (not unlimited) level appears optimal for cardiovascular mortality specifically.
